What causes dry skin?
Dry skin is caused by the protective moisture barrier’s inability to produce enough natural skin lipids or oils. These lipids work to retain moisture naturally found in the skin. A weakened barrier can often be hereditary but can also be caused by ageing, when mature oil glands begin to produce less oil. When skin lacks sufficient moisture, (dehydration) can also contribute to dry skin and can be caused by environmental exposure, low humidity, changes in temperature, poor diet and harsh cleansers that strip the skin.

Some signs of dry skin are:
  • Flaking
  • Scaling
  • Tightness
  • Skin feels uncomfortable and irritated
  • Fine lines and wrinkles will appear more rapidly than other skin types, so it is especially important to avoid damaging sun exposure and protect the skin with sunscreen daily

Tips to avoid dry skin :
  • Avoid harsh, over-drying cleansers
  • Avoid excessive scrubbing or hot water to cleanse the skin
  • Moisturise immediately after facial cleansing and bathing to lock in moisture
  • Avoid sun exposure and apply a physical sunscreen containing zinc oxide with a minimum of SPF 15
  • Drink plenty of water and avoid excessive amounts of alcohol and caffeine to prevent dehydration
