What causes dry skin?
Dry skin is caused by the protective moisture barrier’s
inability to produce enough natural skin lipids or oils. These lipids work
to retain moisture naturally found in the skin. A weakened barrier can
often be hereditary but can also be caused by ageing, when mature oil glands
begin to produce less oil. When skin lacks sufficient moisture, (dehydration)
can also contribute to dry skin and can be caused by environmental exposure,
low humidity, changes in temperature, poor diet and harsh cleansers that
strip the skin.
